Wawa Welcome America CEO Michael DelBene Out

Michael DelBene has departed as CEO of Wawa Welcome America, a surprising shakeup occurring just days after Philadelphia celebrated its largest-ever festival for the nation's 250th birthday.

DelBene was instrumental in planning two of the city's major events this year: the FIFA Fan Fest and the July 4th festivities on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The organization announced the departure on Monday but did not provide a specific reason, stating only that DelBene's tenure had concluded.

"His tenure has concluded," Welcome America said in a statement. DelBene commented that he is moving on to his "next adventure" and expressed confidence in the board and leadership team for continued success.

Appointed CEO in 2019, DelBene became the organization's longest-serving chief executive. Mayor Cherelle Parker credited him with overseeing "a period of significant growth" for the festival. DelBene described the recent festival as a "spectacular accomplishment" despite weather-related cancellations and delays.

The organization affirmed its mission to produce civic celebrations and cultural programming that unite Philadelphians and showcase the city. DelBene's departure also follows questions regarding the festival's future branding and sponsorship after this year's concert was renamed.
