Waymo Expands Driverless Robotaxi Service to Four New U.S. Cities
Alphabet's self-driving unit, Waymo, is launching fully driverless rides in San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, Florida, and Denver. This expansion accelerates the company's growth in the nascent U.S. robotaxi market.

Waymo, Alphabet's autonomous vehicle division, is expanding its fully driverless robotaxi service to four new U.S. cities: San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, Florida, and Denver. The company announced the rollout will begin in the coming weeks, initially for employees, before opening to the public.
This move further solidifies Waymo's position as a leader in the burgeoning U.S. robotaxi market, where it already operates in over a dozen cities. The expansion comes as competitors like Tesla and Zoox (owned by Amazon) also ramp up their efforts in select markets, with Zoox testing services in Austin and Miami, and Tesla expanding in Texas and Florida.
Waymo secured $16 billion in funding from Alphabet and other investors earlier in 2026, fueling its aggressive expansion plans. The company has completed over 20 million autonomous miles to date and aims to reach one million weekly rides by the end of the year. It also plans international expansion with a London launch later in 2026.
The company has faced challenges as its fleet grows, including instances of vehicles becoming stranded due to battery depletion in traffic and navigating difficult weather conditions. Waymo continues to refine its technology and operational capabilities amidst these ongoing developments.
