Srikanth Thirumalai, Waymo's VP of Onboard Software, shared his insights in a blog post titled "10 AI Lessons from Driving 200+ Million Fully Autonomous Miles." While not directly naming Tesla or Elon Musk, his message conveyed that Tesla's system, which heavily relies on cameras, is insufficient for complete autonomy.
Thirumalai noted that while cameras are "incredible," they are "not enough." He referenced the long-standing debate on whether cameras alone could solve the challenge of full autonomy, suggesting that Waymo believes multiple sensor types are necessary. The company's stance is that reliable handling of complex driving scenarios requires a more comprehensive sensor suite.
