Waymo Reportedly Considering End to Uber Partnership

Alphabet's self-driving car unit, Waymo, is reportedly considering ending its existing partnership agreement with Uber, amid reports of rising tensions between the two companies.
The current contract, which allows Waymo's robotaxis to be integrated into Uber's ride-hailing service in Austin and Atlanta, is set to conclude in May 2028. However, Waymo has informed Uber of its intention to also offer its robotaxi services through its own app in these markets, starting in January 2028. The two companies have already dissolved their partnership in Phoenix earlier this year.
Relations between Waymo and Uber have been strained in recent months. Uber's Chief Technology Officer has publicly raised concerns regarding the safety behavior of Waymo's robotaxis. Additionally, both companies have found themselves on opposing sides in policy debates concerning regulations for autonomous vehicles.
The potential termination of this agreement could significantly alter the availability of self-driving taxis on Uber's platform and impact the competitive landscape of the autonomous vehicle industry. Waymo has not yet issued a public comment on the reports.
