Waymo Robotaxi Fleet Expands to 15 U.S. Cities

Waymo, the autonomous driving unit of Alphabet, has significantly expanded its commercial robotaxi operations across the United States. Initially operating in just three cities in September 2024, the service now spans 15 U.S. cities, with ridership reaching an average of 500,000 paid robotaxi rides per week.

Approximately 80% of Waymo's fleet of roughly 4,000 vehicles is concentrated in California and Texas. Recent data indicates a rapid increase in Texas, where Waymo's fleet has grown by nearly 50% in the past three weeks. This growth is partly attributed to the introduction of a new Chinese-manufactured minivan, branded "Ojai" by Waymo, which the company believes will aid in scaling its operations.

Vehicle registration data for Texas shows a 49% increase in Waymo's fleet in the state over the last three weeks, bringing the total to 1,102 autonomous vehicles as of September 24. Waymo first launched commercial service in Austin in March 2025 through a partnership with Uber and has since expanded its services to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.

The remaining approximately 800 vehicles are distributed across other states, including Arizona and Florida. While the fleet primarily consists of Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs, the "Ojai" minivan is becoming a more prominent part of the fleet. Waymo is headquartered in California's Silicon Valley, where much of its initial testing and development took place.
