Waymo Robotaxis Expand to Canada
Alphabet's self-driving unit Waymo has received approval to begin testing its robotaxis in Ontario, Canada. The company will initially map and test vehicles on Toronto streets.

Alphabet's self-driving unit Waymo is expanding into Canada after receiving approval to participate in Ontario's automated vehicle pilot program. The company will begin by mapping local street networks and testing its autonomous vehicles on public roads in Toronto.
Waymo typically follows a phased approach for new market entries. This involves manual mapping to create high-definition maps, followed by testing with a human safety operator present. A commercial robotaxi service would be introduced at a later stage.
This move into Canada is part of Waymo's accelerated push into new territories. The company has rapidly expanded its operations, now offering robotaxi services in 15 U.S. cities and testing in London and Tokyo.
Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana stated that the Canadian expansion is a significant milestone. The challenging conditions in Toronto, including potential winter weather, will test the capabilities of Waymo's autonomous technology and operational expertise.
