Waymo Secures $5 Billion Loan for Expansion Plans

Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving technology company, has secured a $5 billion term loan, marking its first foray into debt financing. The substantial loan is earmarked to accelerate the company's plans for expanding its robotaxi fleet into new markets both within the United States and internationally.

The funding, announced on October 8, was led by a group of lenders including PIMCO, Blackstone, and Sixth Street. Other notable participants included Capital Group, Loomis Sayles, and T. Rowe Price, with Goldman Sachs acting as the sole lead bookrunner. Waymo's Chief Financial Officer, Steve Fieler, stated that this financing represents "an important step in our evolution into a scaling commercial enterprise."

Waymo recently launched its ride-hailing service in its 15th U.S. city and has also announced intentions to expand into overseas markets such as London and Tokyo. These moves are part of a broader strategy to increase its global commercial footprint.

Fieler added that the capital will "accelerate the continued expansion of our fully autonomous ride-hailing service across the United States and internationally." He emphasized that the financing provides Waymo with long-term flexibility to execute swiftly, scale thoughtfully, and continue to lead the autonomous vehicle industry responsibly.

This $5 billion loan follows a significant $16 billion equity raise completed earlier this year, which valued Waymo at $126 billion. Prior to this debt financing, Waymo had primarily relied on funding from its parent company, Alphabet, and external equity investors.
