Waymo first revealed its plans to enter the Japanese market in December 2024. Since then, the company has been collaborating with taxi operator Japan Transo and mobility platform GO, conducting supervised autonomous driving tests in the country since early 2025. The company suggests the service will help enhance Tokyo's transportation network and address challenges related to an aging population and potential future labor shortages in the transport sector.
The initial commercial deployment in Tokyo is expected to commence with a limited number of vehicles. Waymo aims to gradually expand its fleet to approximately 100 vehicles, which will serve major districts within Tokyo.
