Waymo to Adjust Ride-Hailing Strategy with Uber

Waymo plans to shift its operational model in Austin and Atlanta, moving away from its reliance on the Uber platform to offer autonomous ride-hailing services. Starting in January 2028, the Alphabet-owned company will direct users to book rides through the standalone Waymo app, a strategy it currently employs in other active markets.

Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana cited rider feedback regarding the unpredictability of the current integrated model. Because Uber’s platform mixes robotaxis with human-driven vehicles, the inconsistent user experience prompted the company to seek a more direct relationship with its customers. Mawakana described the current integrated experience as difficult for riders to navigate.

Uber confirmed it continues to host Waymo vehicles on its app, provided the partnership remains mutually agreeable. While Waymo is consolidating its booking interface, Uber maintains a diverse network of autonomous vehicle partners and indicated that the decision to limit specific vehicle availability within its app was initiated by Waymo.
