Waymo to integrate autonomous systems directly into Toyota bZ4X assembly line
Waymo is partnering with Toyota to produce factory-integrated autonomous electric vehicles in Japan for robotaxi deployment.

Waymo has announced a plan to integrate its self-driving sensor and computer hardware directly into the production of Toyota bZ4X electric vehicles. The manufacturing process will take place at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
This approach marks a departure from traditional industry practices where self-driving technology is added to vehicles after they leave the factory. By incorporating these systems directly onto the assembly line, the companies aim to streamline production and improve technical integration.
The initiative follows a strategic partnership agreement between the two firms announced in April 2025. The vehicles are intended to support Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing expansion in Tokyo. This move highlights an industry-wide push to shift from aftermarket modifications toward purpose-built autonomous vehicle manufacturing.
