Waymo Vehicle Alerts Police to Teen Passengers
A Waymo self-driving vehicle alerted police in San Mateo, California, after detecting suspicious behavior from two teenage passengers during a ride on Monday.

Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving technology company, contacted police on Monday to report suspicious activity involving two teenage passengers within one of its vehicles. The autonomous car detected the behavior using its internal cameras and microphones, then pulled over to a nearby lot and secured the passengers until law enforcement arrived.
Authorities stated the teenagers were allegedly consuming alcohol and firing Orbeez, small gel-like water beads, out of the windows using toy guns. Police responded to the alert as a high-risk traffic stop. Social media footage showed multiple officers and a K9 unit surrounding the Waymo vehicle.
Waymo utilizes its onboard technology to monitor vehicle conditions, assist passengers with lost items, and provide aid during emergencies. In this instance, the system identified actions that appeared to be weapon discharge from the vehicle, though police later confirmed the object was a toy Orbeez gun.
While the company's swift action drew praise from some, others on social media questioned the proportionality of the police response. Concerns were also raised about the autonomous vehicle's decision to lock passengers inside without their consent.
The incident highlights emerging scenarios as self-driving services become more integrated into daily life, prompting discussions about the technology's ability to interpret and respond to complex situations and the associated ethical considerations.
