WBBA Launches AI-Net Certification for Data Communications

The World Broadband Association (WBBA) has officially launched AI-Net, a global certification for data communications infrastructure. The announcement was made at the Asia-Pacific Broadband Development Summit (BDS) in Bangkok on July 15, 2026.

AI-Net is designed as a strategic guideline for global networks to transition from connectivity-centric architectures to intelligence-driven systems. This initiative aims to propel the industry from the "All-Cloud" era into an "All-Intelligence" era, accelerating technological advancement and intelligent transformation.

As artificial intelligence reshapes the global economy, it demands greater capacity, scalability, and intelligence from network infrastructure. Traditional metrics like bandwidth are no longer sufficient. The WBBA's new certification focuses on three key areas: national policy guidance, collaborative industry ecosystems, and the penetration rate of Net5.5G.

The AI-Net assessment considers both macroeconomic and microeconomic dimensions. Macroeconomic evaluation includes national policies and industry development, while microeconomic assessment benchmarks operators on network intelligence and Net5.5G deployment using the IP Network Development Index (IPDI).

Beyond wide area networks, the certification's scope extends to data center networks and security systems. Through AI-Net, the WBBA aims to foster global consensus and promote unified standards for building AI-ready network infrastructures to support future intelligent operations.
