WeChat Cracks Down on Misleading Account Names and Information
WeChat is intensifying its enforcement against accounts using misleading names or containing prohibited information. Since the beginning of the year, the platform has taken action against over 91,000 such accounts.
WeChat, a major Chinese social messaging and mobile payment app, has announced a renewed crackdown on accounts that violate its terms of service regarding account names and information.
The platform stated that it will strictly penalize accounts involved in impersonating others, falsifying identities, embedding prohibited information, or engaging in illicit activities related to account names. This effort is part of an ongoing campaign to maintain a compliant and orderly online environment.
Specific violations targeted include accounts pretending to be official institutions or news media, those falsely claiming professional qualifications without verification, and accounts linking to external sites promoting gambling or pornography. WeChat also prohibits the use of bots to inflate follower counts or the trading of fake verified accounts.
To date this year, WeChat has processed 91,226 accounts for these violations, resulting in the permanent closure of 2,396 accounts. The platform warned that further infractions could lead to severe penalties, including account suspension and permanent bans, reinforcing its commitment to platform integrity.
