Weichai Power Introduces World's First China VI Compliant Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Engine
Weichai Power has launched the WP15, the world's first heavy-duty hydrogen combustion engine to meet China VI emission standards. This development positions the company as a pioneer in zero-carbon heavy-duty mobility.

TIANJIN, China – July 10, 2026 – Weichai Power announced its independently developed WP15 hydrogen direct-injection engine for heavy-duty vehicles has successfully passed China VI vehicle emission certification tests. This makes it the first heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine globally to comply with China's stringent VI emission standard.[br][br]The certification, conducted at the CATARC Automotive Test Center in Tianjin, verified the engine's performance across a full operating cycle, including cold starts, idling, high-speed loads, and transient changes. This ensures its reliability and stability under real-world conditions.[br][br]Designed for zero-carbon heavy transport, the WP15 engine features a 14.6-liter displacement, delivering up to 600 horsepower and 2,800 N•m of torque. It achieves a maximum brake thermal efficiency of 46.8%, offering a blend of strong power, low consumption, and zero emissions.[br][br]With over 90% component commonality with conventional engines, the WP15 reduces production and maintenance costs. The engine is suitable for applications including long-haul trucks, mining vehicles, and large hydrogen power generators. Weichai Power plans to accelerate mass production and support national hydrogen demonstration projects, driving decarbonization in the transportation sector.
