Wellness Vending Machines Improve Campus Healthcare Access
A national grant program is supporting the installation of wellness vending machines on college campuses, offering products such as over-the-counter medications and hygiene essentials.
Colleges across the United States are installing a new type of campus resource: wellness vending machines stocking essentials like over-the-counter pain relievers, menstrual products, and contraception. These machines address concerns from students and their families regarding healthcare accessibility on campus, removing the need for scheduled appointments or trips off-campus.
Traditionally, students have had to rely on bringing all possible health supplies with them, which is not always feasible. Wellness vending machines, legally permitted in every state, offer a quick solution for unexpected needs such as flu symptoms or allergic reactions. They also serve commuter and night students who may require assistance with issues like headaches impacting concentration.
The prevalence of wellness vending machines has significantly increased. Since 2020, the number of machines on campuses including emergency contraception has grown tenfold, from 16 to over 160. Despite this growth, significant gaps in access remain, considering there are over 4,000 colleges in the U.S.
The American College Health Foundation (ACHF) and the American Society for Emergency Contraception (ASEC) have launched a grant program aiding community colleges in installing these wellness machines. The program has supported 12 institutions and organizations providing contraception and other health necessities. A new grant cycle is anticipated in early 2027, and the organizations encourage parents, students, and staff to advocate for the implementation of similar machines on their respective campuses.
