Welthungerhilfe Continues Aid Operations in Afghanistan
German aid organization Welthungerhilfe has resumed the delivery of humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. The organization is negotiating with local authorities to ensure women's continued participation in aid work.

The German aid organization Welthungerhilfe is continuing to deliver vital assistance to the population in Afghanistan. Following discussions with local authorities, the organization is working to ensure that women can participate in aid efforts without restrictions, aligning with UN efforts. This has been crucial for the continuation of aid programs within the country.
After the ban on women's employment was imposed last December, Welthungerhilfe temporarily suspended its projects until mid-February. During this period, the organization engaged in political discussions with the international community and adapted its operational processes to the changed conditions, prioritizing the safety of local female staff. Since February, the distribution of food supplies has resumed in various parts of Afghanistan, with over 35,000 households receiving aid in February and March.
Mathias Mogge, Secretary General of Welthungerhilfe, stated that the organization has held intensive negotiations with local authorities to find solutions. "We can ensure that our aid reaches women and girls," Mogge said. In addition to food aid, approximately 3,000 households received animal feed. Since April, food assistance has been expanded to include the distribution of agricultural tools and seeds for vegetable gardens.
However, Welthungerhilfe expresses concern over the diminishing international support for the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. Only about five percent of the estimated aid needed for 2023 has been funded so far. Mogge warned that hunger and poverty risk being overlooked due to the de facto government's adherence to the employment ban and the existence of numerous other global humanitarian crises.
