Wendy's and Blue Bottle Release Music Albums as Marketing Strategy

Fast food chain Wendy's and coffee retailer Blue Bottle have entered the music industry with the release of their own albums. These releases represent a growing marketing trend where brands are utilizing music as a deeper engagement tool beyond just providing soundtracks for campaigns.

Blue Bottle Coffee, operating over 100 locations, recently unveiled an 11-track contemporary jazz record on vinyl. The Oakland, California-based company described the release as "a celebration of the brand’s Signature Blends" that "invites listeners to slow down, brew a cup of coffee and give the music their undivided attention." Only 1,500 limited edition copies will be available for purchase, with two DJ-hosted listening sessions planned in New York City and Los Angeles.

Wendy's, meanwhile, launched an emo album titled "Songs to Listen to in a Wendy’s Parking Lot," which has garnered positive reviews from listeners. The fast food chain took the album's production seriously, enlisting music industry veteran Matt Squire as executive producer. Squire's credits include work with numerous chart-topping pop artists and bands that defined the early 2000s emo sound.

Cosmetics giant E.l.f. has also joined the trend with its "Mirror Mix" album, which spans various musical genres and provides a platform for seven emerging independent artists. The brand has previously found success with music initiatives, with its album last year generating hundreds of thousands of streams.

The musical connections for these brands are not entirely random. Blue Bottle's founder has a background as a clarinetist, and E.l.f. has a history of giving artists a platform. Wendy's itself has a track record of music projects, including a hip-hop mixtape released in 2018. The trend suggests an increasing focus on creative avenues for brands to connect with consumers through music.
