Wendy's Franchisee with 314 Restaurants Files for Bankruptcy

Meritage Hospitality Group, one of Wendy's largest franchisees, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States. The company operates 314 Wendy's restaurants across 15 states and cited financial pressures and system-wide headwinds affecting the Wendy's brand.

The bankruptcy filing comes after Meritage announced in June the closure of approximately 60 underperforming Wendy's locations as part of an effort to improve its financial performance. Despite these measures, the company stated that the sustained pressures on the Wendy's brand significantly impacted its financial position.

Wendy's, the third-largest fast-food hamburger chain globally, has faced recent challenges including declining sales and a shrinking store footprint. The company has been contending with issues such as decreased foot traffic, price-sensitive consumers, and rising operational costs, mirroring broader industry trends.

Despite the bankruptcy filing, Meritage Hospitality Group intends to continue operating its restaurants during the restructuring process. The company has indicated it will maintain wage and benefit payments for its approximately 9,000 employees without interruption and has not announced further store closures related to the bankruptcy.
