Wendy's Loses U.S. Second Place to Burger King Amid Quality Concerns

Wendy's has lost its position as the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. by systemwide sales, with Burger King overtaking it. The shift follows six consecutive quarters of declining sales and traffic for Wendy's.

Burger King has reclaimed the No. 2 spot, six years after it was surpassed by Wendy's in 2020. While Wendy's sales have shrunk over the past two years, Burger King's have grown. In the second quarter of 2026, Wendy's same-store sales fell by 7%, whereas Burger King's increased by 8.5%.

New CEO Bob Wright, who took the helm in May, attributed the company's struggles to "quality degradation." Wright stated that the brand's quality differentiation has eroded and its value proposition has weakened, negatively impacting customer experience and traffic.

Wright outlined a future strategy focused on creating "compelling value," encompassing intrinsic, everyday, and promotional value. He acknowledged that turning the business around will take time but expressed confidence that addressing these issues directly will yield positive results.
