Wero payment service expands to e-commerce in Germany
German payment service Wero, backed by Sparkasse and Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken, has launched in e-commerce following a successful rollout of P2P payments.
The Wero payment service has now been extended to online commerce in Germany, marking the next phase for the joint European payment initiative. This expansion enables customers of Sparkasse banks and Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken cooperative banks to make purchases online using Wero.
The launch for online payments was announced at an EPI press conference on November 17, 2025, in Frankfurt. The event revealed the initial retailers integrating Wero into their online stores, including CTS Eventim, Decathlon, Lidl, and Rossmann, among others. This development follows Wero's successful debut in peer-to-peer (P2P) payments last year.
S-Payment GmbH, working closely with EPI and Finanz Informatik, has ensured the e-commerce solution's readiness for Sparkasse banks in time for the official launch. This establishes the foundation for broader adoption of Wero in digital retail and an enhanced customer experience within the Sparkasse financial group.
Germany is the first country to implement Wero for e-commerce. In 2026, the service is planned to launch in four additional countries: Belgium, France, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, where the migration of the iDEAL solution to Wero is scheduled to begin next year.
