West Virginia American Water Highlights Source Water Protection Efforts
West Virginia American Water is marking the annual Source Water Protection Week by detailing its measures to ensure clean and safe drinking water supplies.
Charleston, W.Va. – In observance of the American Water Works Association's annual Source Water Protection Week, West Virginia American Water is emphasizing its ongoing commitment to providing safe, clean, and reliable water services.
The company is highlighting several programs and partnerships aimed at safeguarding water sources from potential contamination. These include algae monitoring utilizing FlowCam technology, active involvement in emergency management coordination, and participation with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO).
Furthermore, the utility collaborates with West Virginia forestry partners and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to underscore the connection between healthy forested watersheds and dependable water sources. A pilot program is also underway along the Elk River to evaluate upstream water quality changes.
West Virginia American Water is also encouraging public participation in source water protection year-round. Recommendations include landscaping choices that promote water infiltration, avoiding chemical application before rain, and keeping litter out of storm drains. The company also advises using less toxic household products and properly disposing of pharmaceuticals and hazardous waste.
