WhatsApp Account Bans Raise Transparency Concerns

Users across India and other regions have reported sudden WhatsApp account bans and restrictions, sparking concerns over the transparency of the messaging app's automated moderation systems and the effectiveness of its account recovery processes.

Numerous users, including business leaders and consultants, have experienced their accounts being placed "under review" or permanently banned without clear justification. While some have had their accounts restored within hours, others remain locked out or claim permanent bans without explanation, causing significant disruption to personal and professional communication.

Experts are critical of the platform's approach. Mishi Choudhary of the Software Freedom Law Center emphasizes that while automated systems are necessary to combat spam, Meta should increase accountability. The lack of information on the reasons for bans, the number of affected users, and the reversal rates leaves users in the dark when they lose access to a critical communication service.

Cybersecurity expert Ritesh Bhatia of V4WEB Cybersecurity stated that users should receive clearer explanations when enforcement actions are taken against their accounts. Generic notifications leave users with little opportunity to understand the alleged violation or effectively challenge the platform's decision. While full technical details cannot be expected, merely citing 'Terms of Service' is no longer an adequate explanation, especially as WhatsApp has become critical communication infrastructure.
