WhatsApp banned over 5.1 million Indian accounts in June, acted on 414 grievances

WhatsApp banned 5,104,127 accounts in India during June 2026, according to its monthly compliance report. Approximately 27% of these bans, totaling 1,369,080 accounts, were proactive actions taken before any user complaints were lodged.

The report, which covers June 1 to June 30, also detailed that WhatsApp received 15,182 user grievances in India. Of these, only 414 accounts were actioned, representing a processing rate of about 2.7%. The majority of complaints fell into "ban appeal" categories, with 7,873 complaints leading to 92 account actions, and "other support" requests, numbering 6,665, resulting in 320 actions.

WhatsApp stated that not all grievances were actioned for various reasons. Some requests involved feature assistance or feedback rather than explicit violations. Others sought the restoration of banned accounts that did not breach Indian law or WhatsApp's terms of service. Complaints related to safety are not marked as "actioned" through the grievance officer channel, as they are redirected to in-app reporting.

During June, India's Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) issued three orders to WhatsApp, all of which the company reported complying with. In the preceding month, May, WhatsApp banned 7.2 million accounts and received nearly 20,000 user grievances. The GAC issued 15 orders in May.
