Whimsymaxxing Trend Fuels Demand at Craft Retailers
The social media trend "whimsymaxxing," focused on decorating items with gem stickers, is driving increased demand at craft supply stores. Michaels reports a significant surge in searches related to the trend.

A burgeoning social media trend known as "whimsymaxxing," which involves adorning surfaces like faces, pets, and cars with large, colorful gem stickers, is creating a noticeable uptick in business for craft supply retailers. Michaels, a prominent craft store chain, has observed a substantial increase in search queries for "bedazzling kit" and related terms.
Stacey Shively, chief merchandising officer at Michaels, stated that internal site searches for "bedazzling kit" grew by 69,000 from May to August, with the word "bedazzle" increasing by 18,000 searches. While the term "whimsymaxxing" is recent, the underlying activity of "making things shiny" has been on an upward trend for approximately three years, with Michaels internally referring to it as "diamond art." The trend has been amplified by cultural moments such as Taylor Swift's Eras Tour and recent celebrity styles.
According to retail consulting firm Columbus Consulting, businesses must be agile in responding to microtrends that can crest and crash rapidly. The typical product development and supply chain can take 4–6 weeks, a timeframe that may be too long for fleeting viral trends. Retailers need to quickly assess the longevity of a trend versus the time it takes to bring products to market.
Michaels, however, is well-positioned due to its existing inventory of gem stickers. The company's e-commerce team can rapidly create product bundles and optimize online visibility based on trending search terms. Shively anticipates continued strong demand as students return to school for events and with the upcoming holiday season approaching.
Art therapist Allie Joy expressed hope that "whimsymaxxing" encourages broader creativity and playfulness beyond just the sticker trend. She suggests that "whimsy" itself is a deeper concept that can bring lightness and reconnect individuals with their inner child, advocating for its expansion beyond single-use applications.
