White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt resigned from her position on Wednesday. Reports indicate that President Donald Trump contacted her frequently during her maternity leave, inquiring about her return to work.

In a statement on X, Leavitt cited her inability to balance the demands of her role with the needs of her two young children. Leavitt, 28, gave birth to her second child in May and returned to her duties 11 weeks later. Federal law provides up to 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave in the U.S., a country that offers less parental support than other high-income nations.

Leavitt is the youngest press secretary in U.S. history. Her departure adds to a broader trend of working mothers leaving the workforce. Since January, 845,000 women have exited the U.S. labor force, with women accounting for all job losses in July while men gained jobs.

President Trump announced on Truth Social that Leavitt will serve as one of his top outside advisors and an influential voice within the Republican Party.
