WHO Calls for Greener Practices in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Distribution

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a call to action for the pharmaceutical industry to enhance sustainability in its operations. Titled "Greener pharmaceuticals’ regulatory highway," the initiative emphasizes the need for regulatory innovation to decrease the environmental impact of medical products while ensuring safety and efficacy.

Health systems contribute approximately 5% of global carbon emissions, a figure the WHO deems unsustainable amidst worsening climate change. The organization is calling on global regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to implement eco-friendly practices throughout the product lifecycle, from manufacturing to distribution and use.

Key proposals include developing new standards for sustainable production and supply chains, leveraging digital transformation to improve regulatory capacity, particularly in lower-income countries, and streamlining processes to accelerate the adoption of environmentally sound innovations. Increased transparency and accountability in supply chain practices are also encouraged.

WHO plans to develop a white paper on sustainable regulatory practices, with a global summit scheduled for late 2025. This event aims to bring together experts to advance transformative actions and foster lasting change towards a greener pharmaceutical sector.
