WHO Coordinates Global COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

Geneva, Switzerland – The World Health Organization (WHO) is at the forefront of the global effort against the COVID-19 pandemic, orchestrating the largest simultaneous vaccine distribution drive in history. Launched in February 2021, the operation prioritizes speed and precision to contain the pandemic.

Dr. Katherine O'Brien, WHO's Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals, described the undertaking as unprecedented in its speed, dimension, and simultaneous global nature. The organization is serving concurrently as a medical encyclopedia, regulator, and policymaker.

The vaccine development process has involved rigorous scientific oversight. WHO has established target product profiles outlining minimum requirements for vaccines, with over 200 candidate vaccines currently under development. Only those meeting stringent safety and quality standards receive WHO's approval, ensuring their efficacy and safety for healthy individuals.

WHO is also assisting countries with the complex distribution process amidst a global shortage of doses. This includes addressing ethical considerations, such as vaccine prioritization and the inclusion of vulnerable populations like refugees. The WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) provides guidance to countries, emphasizing six core values: human well-being, global equity, reciprocity, equal respect, national equity, and legitimacy.

Minimizing errors is crucial for public trust, with WHO stressing the need for meticulous planning from logistics to delivery timing to build confidence within communities.
