WHO Director-General Thanks Tenerife for Hantavirus Response

Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has finalized its response operations in Tenerife related to a hantavirus outbreak. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus sent a message of gratitude to the island's residents, praising the Spanish authorities and local community for their "moral courage" and solidarity.

The hantavirus was previously identified in passengers aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius. The WHO collaborated closely with Spanish authorities and partner organizations to ensure the safe disembarkation and subsequent care of over 120 passengers. Director-General Tedros described the operation as a logistical success while emphasizing its humanistic aspects.

"Tenerife chose differently," Tedros stated, referring to the island's openness and humanity during a time when fear can easily lead to aversion. He acknowledged that three individuals died in connection with the virus and extended his deepest condolences to their families. The passing of a Guardia Civil officer during the operation also received recognition.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus specifically thanked the people of Tenerife for their "quiet, steady acceptance." He pledged to return to the island as a visitor, not a crisis responder, to appreciate its beauty and people under calmer circumstances. The WHO will continue to monitor passengers and crew until they are safely reunited with their loved ones.
