WHO Europe: Prepare Health Systems Year-Round for Warming World
The WHO European Region reports nearly 10,000 heat-related deaths this summer. The organization stresses that health systems must be built for year-round preparedness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) European Region is the fastest-warming region globally, with temperatures rising at approximately twice the global average rate. Extreme heat poses a growing threat to public and health security.
Data from just five countries already indicates nearly 10,000 excess deaths linked to heat this summer, with the final toll still being tallied. WHO/Europe emphasizes the need to integrate preparedness for extreme heat events into all health systems on a year-round basis.
The organization notes that the health impacts of heat affect all populations, but are particularly severe for children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Extreme heat waves are anticipated to become more frequent and intense in the coming years.
WHO Europe urges countries to develop and implement national action plans to mitigate the risks associated with heatwaves. These plans should include preventive measures such as early warning systems and public awareness campaigns, alongside enhanced preparedness within healthcare facilities.
