WHO European member states adopt new strategies for aging and AI in healthcare

Representatives from 53 countries have approved frameworks for managing aging populations and the integration of artificial intelligence in medical services.

30 October 2026

During the 76th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe in Copenhagen, member states finalized two key policy frameworks. The new plans address the dual challenges of shifting demographic trends and the rapid expansion of digital health tools across the continent.

The healthy aging strategy focuses on the gap between increased life expectancy and actual health status, aiming to improve the quality of life for older citizens. Simultaneously, the newly adopted roadmap establishes guidelines for the implementation of artificial intelligence within clinical settings, addressing safety, ethics, and operational integration.

These initiatives arrive as healthcare systems face systemic pressure to adapt to evolving technology and changing age structures. The WHO has also initiated preliminary work on a long-term strategy for non-communicable diseases, signaling a broader push toward modernized regional health policies.
