The World Health Organization (WHO) has refined its methodologies for global immunization coverage monitoring and decision-making. The organization's Immunization Data & Decision Making (DDM) unit collects, collates, and analyzes annual data on the performance of global immunization systems.

This data is crucial for ensuring accountability among key bodies such as WHO, UNICEF, and the Gavi Alliance. The primary objective of immunization coverage surveys is to estimate the vaccination rate for specific vaccines or full vaccination schedules among infants, children, adolescents, and/or women of childbearing age.

WHO provides guidance to its member states and partner agencies on survey methods for measuring immunization coverage. The most recent comprehensive manual, "WHO Vaccination Coverage Cluster Survey," was released in 2018, with a revised version anticipated in 2026. The organization has also developed tools like the "Vaccination Coverage Quality Indicators" (VCQI) program to assist statisticians and epidemiologists with data analysis.

Recent publications also include the "Behavioural and social drivers of vaccination" guide, which examines factors influencing vaccine uptake. These resources are intended to enhance the effectiveness and coverage of immunization programs worldwide by supporting accurate, data-driven decision-making.
