WHO Updates COVID-19 Vaccination Guidelines

Geneva – The World Health Organization (WHO) has released updated recommendations for COVID-19 vaccinations, based on guidance from its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) in November 2023. These updates acknowledge the significant level of population immunity developed through both vaccination campaigns and prior infections.

The revised guidelines recommend a single dose for individuals who have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine, with a particular emphasis on high-risk groups. This includes older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, those who are immunocompromised, and healthcare workers with direct patient contact.

Pregnant individuals are advised to receive one dose during each pregnancy. Booster doses are recommended every six to twelve months for older adults, adults with comorbidities, immunocompromised individuals, and healthcare workers, following their most recent dose.

Routine booster vaccinations are not recommended for healthy children, adolescents, and adults. The WHO confirms that all vaccines on its emergency use list provide protection against severe illness and death. Available vaccine types include inactivated virus, protein-based, viral vector, and RNA/DNA vaccines.

Individuals with contraindications, such as a history of severe allergic reactions or fever on the day of vaccination, should not receive the vaccine. Those on anticoagulant therapy can be vaccinated but should inform the healthcare provider administering the vaccine about their medication. It is advisable for all individuals to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice regarding their specific health situation and vaccination needs.
