WHO/Europe: Few know alcohol causes breast cancer
Only 15% in the EU know alcohol is a risk factor for breast cancer. WHO/Europe launches a new AI-powered hub to help health professionals initiate conversations.

The World Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) has launched a new digital hub with a built-in AI assistant to improve awareness of the link between alcohol and breast cancer. Only approximately 15% of the European Union's population recognizes alcohol as a cancer risk factor, despite its established link to breast cancer.
The new tool is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the necessary resources to initiate conversations with patients about alcohol consumption and its associated health risks. The launch, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, underscores the need for a more proactive approach.
Through this initiative, WHO/Europe aims to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. The organization is calling for better dialogues about the relationship between alcohol and health, ensuring that scientific evidence translates into healthier lifestyles across Europe.
The hub provides health professionals with tools and information to more effectively support their patients in reducing information deficits and associated health risks.
