Wikimedia Foundation US Staff Join Unionization Drive

US-based employees at the Wikimedia Foundation have joined the ongoing unionization effort, expanding on actions first announced by UK staff. The foundation, which operates Wikipedia, has reportedly declined to voluntarily recognize the union formed by its employees.

In June, UK staff were the first to announce intentions to form a union. Now, US employees are following suit, but the foundation's management has refused recognition, despite employee requests.

According to a statement from the Communications Workers of America, employees feel the foundation's management actions contradict public statements. The union stated, "While the Wikimedia Foundation touts to the public that they plan to take a neutral stance in our organizing efforts, they have already proven that not to be the case behind the scenes."

The situation is poised to enter a formal recognition process, as employees seek official acknowledgment of their union, which management has thus far resisted. This development aligns with broader trends of employee organizing within the technology sector.
