WindBorne Systems Secures Major US Air Force Contract for Balloon Data
WindBorne Systems has secured a significant contract with the U.S. Air Force to provide atmospheric data collected by its autonomous weather balloons. The deal represents a major milestone for the technology startup.

The U.S. Air Force will purchase data collected by WindBorne Systems' fleet of autonomous weather balloons under a new contract potentially worth nearly $50 million. This agreement marks a substantial advancement for the technology startup.
WindBorne Systems currently operates approximately 700 weather balloons globally, gathering atmospheric sensor readings. This data is sold to clients and also integrated into the company's proprietary AI-powered weather forecasting model. Founded in 2015 and based in Redwood City, California, WindBorne is a pioneer in directly feeding empirical data into deep learning models for weather prediction.
The company has a history of collaboration with U.S. government entities, including the National Weather Service, and the Air Force and Navy. This latest contract, however, is the single largest project the company has undertaken. Valued at up to $49 million, it is expected to significantly fuel WindBorne Systems' growth and the application of its technology within the defense sector.
This contract is anticipated to solidify WindBorne Systems' standing in the field of atmospheric data and forecasting technology. The company's unique approach, merging balloon technology with artificial intelligence, offers the potential for more accurate and real-time weather predictions, which are critical for military operations. Future development efforts will likely focus on expanding data collection capabilities and refining model accuracy.
