Windows 11 Improves Large File Deletion Process

Microsoft is making significant improvements to the way Windows 11 handles the deletion of large files. The operating system will now process these operations more efficiently, addressing a long-standing user frustration with the "Calculating..." dialog.

Recent internal preview builds of Windows 11, released in late July, feature optimizations to File Explorer designed to speed up the removal of large and fragmented files. Previously, the system would often display a "Calculating" dialog box, the duration of which was unpredictable. This was particularly noticeable on traditional hard drives where files could be split into thousands of fragments requiring numerous read/write operations.

While solid-state drives (SSDs) have eliminated mechanical seeking times, the process of locating and deleting these scattered fragments still took considerable time. Microsoft has not detailed the exact technical changes, but the outcome is a faster deletion process for large files across different storage types.

In addition to file deletion enhancements, the update also brings faster response times to the File Explorer's "Home" page and improves the reliability of the address bar. These changes are currently available to users in the Insider Experimental channel and are expected to be part of future stable releases of Windows 11.
