Windows 11 Restores File Preview Capability with Added Safeguards

Microsoft is developing a new feature for its Windows 11 operating system aimed at improving the file preview experience within File Explorer. Soon, users will see a "Preview anyway" button, designed to address the preview functionality that was previously disabled due to security concerns.

The feature, which Microsoft expects to begin rolling out in the coming weeks, will restore the ability to preview files like PDFs and documents directly in File Explorer's preview pane without needing to open them in separate applications. Previously, since October 2025, Microsoft had blocked this function for files downloaded from the internet due to security risks, such as the potential leakage of NTLM hashes.

The issue manifested as downloaded files receiving a warning in File Explorer about potential harm, making previews impossible. Users had to manually access file properties and unblock them or use scripts to enable previews, which proved inconvenient. This limitation applied to files marked with the "Mark of the Web," often downloaded through browsers or cloud storage.

The new "Preview anyway" button will offer users the option to bypass the warning and preview a file if they trust its origin. This balances Microsoft's commitment to enhanced security with user needs for quick file inspection without extra steps. The feature has been observed in Windows Insider builds, with wider adoption anticipated soon.
