Windows Desktop OS Share Falls Below 60% for First Time
StatCounter data reveals Windows' share of global desktop operating systems dropped below 60% in June for the first time. This marks a significant shift in the desktop OS landscape.

Microsoft Windows has seen its global market share for desktop operating systems fall below 60% for the first time in June, according to data from StatCounter. The analytics firm reported that Windows' share stood at 56.55% for the month.
This decline follows a consistent downward trend observed over the past year. In April, Windows held 63.66% of the market, followed by 62.06% in May. The drop below the 60% threshold signifies a notable change in user preferences.
While Windows loses ground, other operating systems are gaining traction. Apple's macOS and OS X combined accounted for 16.4% of the market in June (11.91% for OS X and 4.49% for macOS). Linux distributions also reached a new high of 4.39% market share.
Further details from related reports indicate shifts within Windows versions, with Windows 10 seeing its share rise to 28.1% while Windows 11's share decreased to 69.92% in June.
