Windows Security Software Tested: 16 Products Achieve Top Scores

IT security institute AV-TEST has completed a comprehensive test of 16 different security packages designed for the Windows operating system. The evaluation, conducted in May and June 2023, assessed how effectively the software protects users against malware, including viruses, Trojans, and ransomware.

The primary goal was to identify the most effective solutions for consumer users, particularly given that modern malware often operates discreetly. Such threats aim to utilize computer resources for cryptocurrency mining, distribute spam, or enlist infected computers into botnets. AV-TEST's laboratory analyzed a total of over 16,500 distinct malware samples.

The test results indicate a high level of effectiveness across many of the tested products. Thirteen out of the sixteen reviewed security packages received either the maximum of 18 points or 17.5 points, earning them the AV-TEST "TOP PRODUCT" designation. Notably, Microsoft's own Windows Defender for consumers was among the top performers.

Regarding protection effectiveness, nine programs successfully blocked all threats presented in the malware test with 100% success. These include products from AhnLab, Avast, AVG, Avira, Bitdefender, McAfee, Norton, PC Matic, and Trend Micro. The assessment also covered software performance and usability, evaluating system resource impact and ease of management.
