Windward acquires Azimut.ai to enhance maritime visual surveillance
Windward has acquired Azimut.ai, a firm specializing in visual intelligence for the maritime sector. The acquisition enables the integration of optical sensors to track vessels in high-traffic maritime zones.

Maritime AI company Windward has announced the acquisition of Azimut.ai to bolster its vessel-tracking capabilities. The integration adds an optical sensing layer to Windward’s existing multi-source platform, allowing for the real-time identification of ships at critical ports and maritime chokepoints.
This technology is intended to mitigate the challenge of tracking vessels that go "dark" by disabling AIS signals to avoid detection. By combining visual proof with existing datasets—such as ownership records, sanctions lists, and behavioral patterns—Windward aims to provide a more reliable operational picture for its government and commercial clients.
CEO Ami Daniel stated that the acquisition provides a proprietary layer of visual intelligence, a move intended to refine data for maritime decision-making. Windward has noted that the system is designed to focus on vessel activity analytics rather than the identification of individuals, citing privacy and security standards as central to its development.
