Wisconsin Data Center Project Creates Millionaire Farmers Amid Later Regret
Vantage Data Centers is constructing a $15 billion campus for Oracle and OpenAI in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Land acquisitions have made previous farmers millionaires, but some now question if they sold too soon.

Vantage Data Centers has acquired over 1,500 acres of land near Port Washington, Wisconsin, for a data center campus to be built for Oracle and OpenAI. The project is expected to involve an investment exceeding $15 billion, with completion targeted for 2028.
The land assembly has already cost developers more than $125 million. These transactions have turned local farmers into millionaires; however, some sellers are now questioning whether they sold their properties too early. According to an analysis by Wisconsin Watch, some families collectively profited at least $20 million from multiple sales.
One notable transaction involved 173 acres sold for $10.2 million, despite a county-assessed fair market value of $590,000. While those who sold realized substantial gains, the ongoing land rush raises questions about whether prices reflected true market value or if buyers capitalized on seller inexperience.
The development is spearheaded by Cloverleaf Infrastructure, a startup founded by energy industry veterans. The company secured $300 million in funding in 2024 to facilitate site acquisition and power supply for data centers. Access to robust electricity is a primary driver for the location of large-scale data centers, explaining the strategic choice of this area.
