WNBA's Valkyries Grew to $1 Billion Valuation Through Strategic Patience
The WNBA team Golden State Valkyries, established with a $50 million expansion fee, has now reached a $1 billion valuation. The team's leadership prioritized brand development before securing sponsorships.

The Golden State Valkyries, the WNBA's newest expansion team, has rapidly achieved a significant milestone: a current valuation of $1 billion. This makes it the first professional women's sports franchise to reach this financial mark. The team's establishment involved a $50 million expansion fee in 2023, with its president, Jess Smith, beginning her tenure under challenging circumstances, lacking a roster and a defined brand.
According to Smith, key factors in the Valkyries' rise include fan engagement, media presence, and sufficient capital. She emphasized that without the necessary capital, ambitious ideas cannot be fully realized. However, she noted that capital alone is insufficient, and the development of the brand was given primary importance. Consequently, potential sponsors were asked to wait until the team's brand identity was clearly established.
"I have to figure this out and direct us where to go... to build this team to the potential that I knew it could be built to," Smith stated on the Masters of Scale podcast, describing her leadership role in setting the team's direction.
The franchise's swift increase in value is attributed to a strategic approach that placed brand building and audience connection at the forefront. The Valkyries' management focused on creating a strong identity before committing to financial partnerships, a strategy that proved successful in fostering rapid growth.
