Woman Sentenced to Probation After Viral Misinformation Case

A Lincoln County judge handed down a three-year probation sentence on October 2, 2026, to Brenda Deutsch, a Winfield foster parent at the center of viral, false claims that she traded a foster child for a monkey. The case garnered significant media attention due to the outlandish nature of the rumors.

Frank & Juengel Law Group P.C., representing Deutsch, worked to present the facts of the case, which they stated did not involve child abuse or any animal transaction. The legal group clarified that the situation stemmed from Deutsch allowing a child to temporarily stay with a friend in another state without first vetting the receiving household. Deutsch pleaded guilty to endangering a child in the first degree, a Class D felony.

During the sentencing hearing, the prosecutor had requested a seven-year prison sentence for Deutsch. However, the judge ultimately imposed three years of supervised probation. The judge also reportedly criticized state licensing features relevant to the case.

Attorney Joseph W. Flees of Frank & Juengel Law Group P.C. stated that media coverage had been harsh and inaccurate. "The international and national media were not kind to my client and described her as having traded a child for an animal, but the actual evidence clearly shows this did not happen," Flees said. He acknowledged a lapse in judgment by his client but argued against imprisonment.
