Work-life balance is key to creativity and performance amid AI
Research suggests that engaging in activities outside of work can boost creativity and job performance, especially as AI takes over routine tasks. However, many are spending free time passively instead of on enriching pursuits.

New research indicates that detaching from work and engaging in outside activities can significantly enhance employees' creativity and performance, particularly as artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent. The unique perspectives and experiences knowledge workers bring from their lives outside of work are increasingly valuable, yet many Americans are spending their free time passively.
Studies suggest that engaging in hobbies and activities after hours can increase workplace creativity, a key competitive differentiator in the age of AI. However, Americans are spending more free time watching TV and scrolling social media than socializing, playing games, reading, or participating in sports.
Furthermore, ample research indicates that a healthy family life and strong community ties can contribute to work-related skills and values. Simultaneously, the US faces a "loneliness epidemic," with over a fifth of Americans reporting isolation. Work is also expanding beyond traditional hours, despite psychological detachment from work improving mental health and well-being.
Research highlights that a strong personal identity separate from one's job title fosters resilience in the workplace. This is particularly relevant given the job cuts attributed to AI. However, many workers still define themselves primarily through their work, leaving them more vulnerable to workplace disruptions.
