Workers Hoarding Expertise Due to AI Replacement Fears

A survey highlighted by Fast Company indicates that 35% of employees are hoarding knowledge, fearing they will be replaced by AI systems they are helping to train.
This situation presents a complex dilemma for companies that require human expertise to develop their AI models. Tech giants like Meta have been collecting data from employee computer activity, such as mouse movements and keystrokes, to train AI agents. Similarly, McKinsey has developed its internal generative AI, Lilli, by leveraging the accumulated expertise within the firm over its history.
While companies view AI integration and data collection as a logical step toward increased efficiency, employee willingness to participate has diminished. Recent waves of layoffs in the tech sector, often attributed to AI capabilities, have fueled job insecurity among workers.
Experts suggest that there is no simple solution. Merely asking for information or observing work processes is insufficient, as employees may intentionally withhold critical details or provide misleading information if they perceive it as personally advantageous. Companies must focus on building trust and fostering an environment of open knowledge sharing to harness AI's potential without encountering resistance from their workforce.
