World Bank: Small AI Models Can Drive Growth in Developing Countries

The World Bank is urging developing nations to develop small AI models. These models can run locally on devices like mobile phones, even with poor internet connectivity, aiding economic development.

The World Bank is advocating for developing countries to create small-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models. These models are designed to operate in 'edge computing' mode on devices such as mobile phones, making them suitable for regions with limited internet access and enabling broader AI adoption.

Paschal Donohoe, the World Bank's Chief Knowledge Officer, stated that AI has the potential to accelerate the development of emerging economies. However, he emphasized that AI solutions must be tailored to local needs for this potential to be realized. Donohoe suggested that AI could compress development timelines significantly, potentially achieving in decades what might otherwise take centuries.

As an example, the World Bank cited its AgriConnect initiative in India. Farmers participating in this program can use their mobile phones to run small AI models that analyze soil conditions, potentially leading to faster crop growth.

The World Bank intends to collaborate with governments and the private sector to foster the development and deployment of such localized AI products.
