World Cup Drives Google Search to Record Queries Per Second

Mountain View, California – Google's search engine set a new record for queries per second during the international soccer tournament, the World Cup. The company stated that the volume of searches reached historic highs, particularly following Argentina's victory over Egypt in a match during the tournament's knockout stage.

Nick Fox, head of Google’s Knowledge and Information unit, confirmed on social media that the company saw its highest usage in history immediately after Argentina scored their winning goal. While specific numbers were not disclosed, a company spokesperson reiterated that the record query rate occurred directly after the decisive goal.

This surge in search activity comes at a time when Google is working to demonstrate the continued relevance of its core search product amid the rise of AI chatbots. Despite the growing competition, Google maintains approximately 90% of the search market share. The company's stock has seen significant growth, more than doubling in the past year, with first-quarter revenue growth being the fastest since 2022.

Following the match, some of the most frequent search queries included "argentina vs egypt," "how many world cup goals does messi have," and questions related to game rules and player career milestones, such as whether it was Messi's last World Cup appearance.
