WorldSkills 2024 Features Record Number of AI-Related Competitions in Shanghai

The 48th WorldSkills Competition is underway in Shanghai, China, from September 22 to 27, with a notable emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI). This year's event includes a record eight skill categories directly related to AI, and introduces three new disciplines: Smart Security Technology, Software Testing, and Digital Interactive Media Design.

The integration of AI is evident in the practical tasks set for competitors. In Smart Security Technology, participants are required to use deep learning algorithms and large model principles to enable surveillance systems to automatically identify anomalies. For Software Testing, AI has evolved from a tool to a collaborative partner, where contestants deploy multiple intelligent agents for autonomous testing while they focus on broader industry-level analysis.

Other AI-infused competitions include Digital Interactive Media Design, focusing on immersive digital experiences and intelligent digital innovation, and Autonomous Mobile Robots, which serves as practical training for "embodied intelligence" in robotics, involving autonomous navigation and environment recognition. The Industry 4.0 category combines machine learning, digital twins, and augmented reality for intelligent collaboration between equipment and systems.

WorldSkills is considered the pinnacle of vocational skills competitions globally, held biennially. China's delegation for this edition comprises 220 individuals, including 71 competitors across all 64 skill categories. The average age of the Chinese competitors is 21.
