Worst and Best Times to Drive During July 4 Weekend
Millions of Americans are expected to travel by car this July 4 holiday weekend. Traffic data indicates specific times when congestion will be at its peak and when it is likely to be minimal.

More than 72 million Americans are projected to travel over the July 4 holiday period, with the majority opting for car travel. Data from INRIX, a transportation analytics firm, suggests that certain times this weekend will experience significantly heavier traffic.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that 72.2 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home during the extended holiday period. While AAA defines the holiday from June 27 to July 5, INRIX anticipates the upcoming weekend will be the busiest travel period.
For drivers, the optimal times to travel are before 11:00 AM on Friday, July 3, after 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 4, and before 11:00 AM on Sunday, July 5.
Conversely, the worst times to be on the road due to congestion are between 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Friday, July 3, between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 4, and between 12:00 PM and 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 5.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 2,719 people died in traffic crashes during July 4 holiday periods from 2020 to 2024. Of those fatalities, 38% involved drivers under the influence of alcohol. NHTSA urges travelers to plan for sober rides and always wear seatbelts.
