Social media platform X is piloting a new "Under the Hood" feature allowing some users to view data explaining why their posts' visibility might be limited.
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is testing a new feature called "Under the Hood" to provide greater transparency into its content distribution mechanisms. This initiative allows select users to access data related to their posts, potentially explaining any limitations placed on their visibility.
The new functionality aims to address long-standing user concerns about "shadowbanning," where content exposure is reduced without explicit notification or account suspension. Users who qualify for the test can find the "Under the Hood" option within their account settings. From there, they can download a JSON file containing account-specific data, which may include "visibility-limiting labels" that detail reasons for restricted distribution.
Based on initial reports, the feature is not designed as a user-friendly visual interface. Interpreting the downloaded JSON data requires a degree of technical understanding. Test cases have shown labels related to NSFW content, which X has previously stated it restricts according to its content policies. These labels indicate reduced visibility rather than an account ban.
X has not yet announced a timeline for a broader rollout of this data download feature, and it remains in a limited testing phase. Only a fraction of users currently have access to the "Under the Hood" section. The company has previously expressed intentions to increase platform transparency, with this feature being a step toward that goal.
